When I first started using AI tools in my personal life and for business, I didn’t think too hard about which one to use. ChatGPT was everywhere. Everyone was talking about it. So I signed up, started using it, and got on with the work.
And for a while, it was fine. Great actually. Fast answers. Decent writing. Overall, a useful tool to have around.
But over time, three things started to bother me. Not in a dramatic way, more like the slow drip of a tap you keep meaning to fix:

This one kept me up at night. When you use an AI tool for business, you’re often typing in real information, such as project notes, business ideas, financial context. I had to ask myself: where does that information go?
OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) has faced ongoing scrutiny about how user data is handled and used to train future models. For me, as someone who works with individuals, small businesses and charities, that’s not a small thing. Many of my clients are community organisations that hold sensitive information about the people they serve.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has taken a more transparent approach to data privacy from the start.
They’ve built Claude with clear policies around how data is used and have been more conservative about using conversations to train their models.
That matters to me. And it should matter to you too.

More Accurate & Reliable Answers
Here’s the thing about confidence: it’s only useful if it’s backed up by something real. ChatGPT could be very confident and quite wrong at the same time. I’d ask it a question, get a detailed answer, and whilst reviewing the output realise something important was off.
Think of it like getting directions from someone who gives you a very firm, very clear answer, and sends you to the wrong street. The confidence made it worse, not better.
Claude feels different.
t’s more likely to say “I’m not certain about this” when it isn’t. It flags gaps. It’s more careful. That honesty makes it far more useful in practice.

Far Better Value for the Cost
Running a small business means watching every outgoing. I believe in the same thing for my clients, which is why I always recommend free tools first and paid upgrades only when they’re genuinely worth it.
Claude’s free tier is pretty generous. More so than ChatGPT’s in my experience. You get access to a highly capable version of Claude without needing a paid plan to do meaningful work. And when you do upgrade, the pricing feels fair for what you get.
For individuals, small businesses and not-for-profits working on tight budgets, that’s not a small thing.
Good tools shouldn’t only be available to people with big budgets.

What This Means for You
You might be wondering why I’m telling you all this. Here’s the simple answer: I believe in being open about how I work. The tools I use shape the quality of what I deliver.
